Fall Protection Buying Checklist: 7 Steps I Use Every Time I Order

A practical 7-step checklist for ordering fall protection equipment, from an office administrator who's been buying Guardian gear for years. Covers harness sizing, anchors, OSHA and ANSI standards, chemical PPE, and choosing a supplier you can actually call.

I'm the office administrator for a mid-sized industrial contractor in Pasadena, Texas—about 260 employees across three locations. Step 1: Know the actual job before you pick a product

Fall protection isn't one thing. It's a system—harness, connecting element, anchorage—and the right setup depends on the work your crew does:

According to OSHA (osha.gov), fall arrest systems must limit the maximum arresting force to 1,800 pounds. That's not a suggestion—it's a hard requirement.

According to OSHA 1910.132, employers must assess the workplace and provide PPE that's appropriate for the hazard. That's compliance, not just good practice.

For most liquid splash scenarios, a workable baseline is: chemical-splash goggles (ANSI Z87.1 rated), nitrile or neoprene gloves per the SDS chart, liquid-proof coveralls, and a face shield for high-splash work. But again—verify against the actual chemical.

Step 6: Buy from a supplier you can actually call

Anybody can ship a box. The difference shows up when something's wrong—a missing part, an incorrect size, a question about a standard—and you need a human on the phone.

  3. Picking the cheapest option without verifying ANSI compliance first
  4. Treating "chemical-rated" as if it covers every chemical
  5. Not budgeting for inspection and eventual replacement

And one odd one: we occasionally get internal requests for things people saw online. Last year someone asked me to order "those Mack Hollins handcuffs" from the NFL celebrations. I get the appeal—they make a fun visual. But novelty cuffs aren't PPE and definitely aren't fall protection. Keep your safety budget for equipment that's rated, tested, and certified. That's what your accountant won't question and what your OSHA inspector will actually want to see.

This checklist works for maybe 8 out of 10 orders we handle. If you're dealing with a complex engineered lifeline system or a multi-story anchor structure, call a qualified safety professional before spending any money. A $500 consultation is cheaper than a fine—or worse.

Prices change, standards get updated, and every crew is different. Do the homework, measure twice, and buy gear your people will actually want to wear.
