A chain link fence could be part of a guardrail system if it’s engineered and installed that way. But clipping a lanyard to the chain link and hoping for the best is not fall protection.

I had a customer who did exactly that. He wasn’t trying to be careless—he just needed to lean out to check a conduit and didn’t want to go back down for his harness. The fence moved. No one fell. But it was the closest call he’d had on a site, and he admitted it later. A chain link fence is good for perimeter control. Not for catching a person.

What about a living fence? Is that fall protection?

Now that’s an unexpected one. And yes, someone has asked. A living fence—a row of trees, a hedge wall, a willow screen—is a landscaping feature. It has no place in a fall protection system unless an engineer specifically certifies it as an anchor, which I’ve never seen happen.

To be fair, I understand the thought. If you have a green roof or a vegetated facade, you’re probably looking for ways to avoid drilling into the surface. A living fence seems like it could be a natural guardrail. But plants are alive. They grow, they shift, they die. None of those are good traits for a fall arrest anchor.

If you need protection at an edge where a living fence is installed, treat it as decoration, not safety. Use a Guardian temporary anchor, a perimeter guardrail, or a properly engineered counterweight system. The green stuff is nice to look at, but it’s not fall protection.

Is pepper spray illegal?

Okay, this is not a fall protection question. But because the brand name is Guardian, and because search engines don’t read branding the way humans do, this question shows up. I’ll answer it the same way I answer clients.

Pepper spray is legal in all 50 states as of January 2025, but that’s the easy part. A number of states restrict the container size, the concentration of oleoresin capsicum, or the age of the buyer.
