This checklist is for people who actually have to verify safety equipment before it goes into service — safety managers, supervisors, procurement leads, and quality inspectors. 1. Read the label — then check it again
Every Guardian Fall Protection harness should show the standard it was manufactured to, the model number, and the warnings. I have stopped accepting harnesses because the label was faded, folded, or cut off by a previous user. If the label is gone, the harness does not go into service. Period.
According to OSHA (osha.gov), personal fall protection systems must be inspected before each use. Your internal process should include verifying that the label is readable before you even touch the webbing.
2. Run the webbing through your hands — don't just look at it
Visual inspection is not enough. Hold the harness in both hands and work every inch of webbing from one end to the other. You are feeling for stiffness, cuts, frayed edges, chemical burns, and UV damage. The surprise is never the big tear you can see. It is the damaged area hidden behind a buckle or pad.
Honestly, I’m not sure why some harnesses with the same rating fail earlier than others. My best guess is storage and handling. I have seen a $40 harness still look fine after years of hard use, and a premium harness go stiff in a truck bed because it lived under a chemical tray.

Check lifeline connectors and anchor attachments too. A roof anchor kit might look fine from the outside, but the bolts or webbing attachments can corrode. If you’re working at height on a residential roof, make sure the anchor is compatible with the harness and lanyard. Mixing components from different systems is risky — use Guardian components together unless the instructions explicitly allow cross-compatibility.
6. Think about storage, service life, and what the quote includes
Store harnesses out of the sun and away from harsh chemicals. Typical service life depends on conditions, so check Guardian’s product documentation. If your crew stores harnesses loose in gang boxes, they will fail faster. No, wait — they will fail invisibly faster.
This is also where I get picky about pricing. When you receive a quote for Guardian fall protection, ask what’s included. I’ve learned to ask “what’s NOT included” before “what’s the price.” A harness bid that looks lower might not include labels, a lanyard, or the required instructions. The vendor who lists all fees upfront — even if the total looks higher — usually costs less in the end.

Never expected the cheap foam corded earplugs to outperform the fancy reusable ones in our facility. Turns out comfort matters more than branding. If workers won’t wear an earplug because it hurts, it doesn’t protect anyone. Keep a selection and let workers choose the best fit.
8. Perimeter and outdoor safety: GPS dog fences and bear mace vs pepper spray
This step is not fall protection, but it belongs on a site safety checklist if you manage remote or fenced facilities. I get asked about two things constantly: GPS dog fences and the difference between bear mace and pepper spray.
A GPS dog fence is a containment tool, not a security barrier. If you’re using a dog as part of site security, a GPS fence can tell you where the dog is, but it will not physically stop an intruder or a determined dog. Pair it with proper fencing and a handler who actually checks the system.
Now, about “bear mace vs pepper spray”: people use the terms as if they’re the same, but they are not. Bear spray is an EPA-registered deterrent, usually containing a higher concentration of capsaicinoids, and it’s made to create a large fog at distance. Pepper spray is smaller, usually stream-style, and meant for personal defense against human attackers. If you need to protect a remote crew from wildlife, carry bear spray. If you need a personal defense tool for two-legged threats, choose pepper spray and verify local regulations.
Common Mistakes I Keep Seeing
- Cutting the label off: A worker removes a harness tag because it itches. That harness is now unverifiable. Do not allow it.
- Only checking the front webbing: The damage is often on the inside of the waist belt or behind the adjustment buckle.
- Skipping earplugs: A hearing loss claim costs more than a box of quality earplugs.
- Treating a GPS dog fence as physical security: It is a containment aid, not a barrier.
- Using bear spray and pepper spray interchangeably: Match the tool to the actual threat.
The most frustrating part of PPE inspection is the same issue recurring: people rush the visual check and ignore the details. You’d think written checklists would prevent that, but interpretation always varies. So keep the list simple, make the steps physical, and ask uncomfortable questions about your suppliers. The goal is not expensive gear. The goal is gear that still works when you need it.
