If you’re a safety manager, procurement officer, or business owner responsible for outfitting a crew with fall protection gear—and you’re overwhelmed by the options—this checklist is for you. You’re probably dealing with multiple vendor quotes, product specs that look identical on paper, and pressure to keep costs down.
I’ve been on your side of the table. I’m a Quality and Brand Compliance manager for an industrial safety company. It’s my job to review every single piece of PPE that goes out the door—roughly 400+ unique items a year—to make sure it meets our specs. I’ve rejected about 12% of first delivery batches in 2024 alone for things like webbing fray, inconsistent stitching, or mislabeled tension ratings.
Bottom line: comparing fall protection isn’t just about the unit price. There’s a lot going on beneath the surface. This 5-step checklist will help you compare apples to apples, spot hidden costs, and make a decision you won’t regret six months from now.
Step 1: Check for Real-World Compliance, Not Just a Certificate
Every harness or lanyard you look at will claim it meets ANSI Z359.11 or OSHA 1926.502. That’s table stakes.
What I do is look for the actual test report or a batch-specific certification number. I’ve seen products come in with a generic “Meets ANSI” stamp in their catalog, but when we tested a random sample from the batch, the gate strength was borderline. The vendor said, “It’s within industry tolerance.” We said, “We’re not accepting that.” The contract now includes a clause requiring batch-specific test certification.
Checklist:
- Does the product have a visible, traceable label with ANSI/OSHA references?
- Can the supplier provide a test report for this specific batch?
- Is the certification current? Standards get updated. A product certified to Z359.1 from 2007 might not meet Z359.11-2021 requirements.
Red flag: A supplier who says “Everyone meets those standards” without offering proof.
Step 2: Evaluate Durability, Not Just Weight
A lighter harness makes workers happy, but is it tough enough for your environment?
Here’s something vendors won’t tell you: the weight reduction often comes from thinner webbing or fewer reinforcements at stress points. I ran a blind test with our quality team last year: same style harness from two different suppliers. One had a 2-inch wide leg strap with a reinforced bartack. The other had a 1.75-inch strap with a single stitch pattern. Of the 15 team members who handled them blind, 12 could tell the difference—they said the lighter one felt “flimsy.” The cost per unit was only $4 apart.
Checklist:
- What is the webbing width at key stress points (leg straps, dorsal D-ring)?
- Are the friction buckles and D-rings forged or stamped? Forged is stronger and costs more.
- Ask for a sample to test. Run a drop test on a single unit if you can. Seeing a D-ring deform is a deal-breaker.
Step 3: Verify System Compatibility (This is Where People Get Stuck)
A harness is just one part of the system. You need to know how it connects to your lanyards, lifelines, and anchor points.
I don’t have hard data on how many incidents are caused by incompatible components, but based on our audits, I’d guess it’s a significant percentage. People assume all carabiners click into all D-rings equally well. The reality is some gate openings are too small for thicker webbing loops, and some shock-absorbing lanyards are too long for your specific work area.
Checklist:
- Are the connector types (snap hooks, carabiners) compatible with your existing anchors and lanyards?
- Check the gate opening size. Is it wide enough for your anchor loop?
- Does your lanyard’s maximum arresting force match the harness’s rated capacity?
Step 4: Calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
This is the step most people skip. They compare unit price and that’s it.
But the $45 harness that lasts one season is more expensive than the $65 harness that lasts three seasons. Especially when you factor in replacement labor and the risk of a failure.
From the outside, it looks like you’re saving $20 per unit. The reality is you’ll be re-ordering sooner, your workers will be training on new gear more often, and you might eat the cost of a failed inspection. I’ve seen companies buy cheap harnesses that failed an annual re-certification because the webbing wore out too fast. That’s a $22,000 redo for a crew of 40.
Checklist:
- What is the manufacturer’s stated service life? Most synthetic webbing is rated for 5 years from date of manufacture. But how long will it last in your conditions (sunlight, chemicals, abrasion)?
- Does it require expensive annual re-certification? Some harnesses need factory servicing. Others can be inspected in-house.
- What happens if a component fails? Is it replaceable, or do you buy the whole set again?
Step 5: Assess the Supplier’s After-Sale Support
You can buy the best harness in the world, but if the supplier can’t ship a replacement buckle on time, you’re stuck.
I’ve dealt with vendors who were great on price but terrible on communication. When we needed to swap a batch of lanyards because of a minor spec change, it took them 6 weeks to even acknowledge the request. Meanwhile, we had a crew waiting. That delay cost us time and trust with our own client.
I wish I had tracked response times more carefully from the start. What I can say anecdotally is that our current preferred vendor replies to technical questions within 24 hours and ships replacement parts within 3 days. That’s worth something.
Checklist:
- What is their typical response time for a technical question? (48 hours is acceptable; 1 week is a red flag.)
- Can they provide expedited shipping for replacement parts?
- Do they offer product training for your safety team? That saves you time and ensures proper use.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
Mistake #1: Assuming a higher price equals higher quality. It doesn’t always. Some premium brands just have higher margins. You have to look at the specs and test data.
Mistake #2: Buying for one job rather than for the long haul. If you buy a cheap harness for a one-week project, fine. But if you’re building a system for ongoing work, invest in durability.
Mistake #3: Ignoring the storage requirement. Some harnesses need to be stored in climate-controlled environments. If yours will sit in a hot truck all summer, that affects the webbing life. Check the temp rating.
Mistake #4: Forgetting about the worker. A comfortable harness is worn correctly. An uncomfortable harness gets left in the locker. Get worker feedback on fit and adjustability. A 15% higher per-unit cost is justified if it means 50% better compliance.
