The most expensive safety product is the one that was cheap
Stop buying safety equipment on sticker price. I know that sounds like something a manufacturer says, but I say it from a different seat. I review safety equipment for a living. I am a quality and compliance manager at an industrial safety company, and I examine roughly 3,000 fall protection and PPE items a year. In 2024, I rejected about 9% of first deliveries because labels were unreadable, certificates were missing, or stitching did not match approved samples. Those rejected items looked fine to the untrained eye. They were not fine.
The point I want to make is simple: total cost of ownership matters more than the purchase price. That is not a procurement cliché. It is the difference between a quote and the whole cost that follows when equipment creates a compliance issue, a rework, a delay, or an injury.
Fall protection is a system, not a commodity
A harness is not a SKU in a catalog. A harness is part of a personal fall arrest system that includes anchorage, body support, connectors, maybe a lifeline, and always a rescue plan. If any part of that chain is weak, the rest of the system may not hold. This is why a one-dimensional price comparison fails.

I evaluate the label that explains which anchor it fits, how much free fall it allows, what weight range it covers, and when it must be removed from service. A worker who gets a lanyard without that information is not properly equipped. They are just wearing straps.

I have the same conversation with every critical supplier: get the documentation before the shipment, not after. According to OSHA’s construction fall protection standard, 29 CFR 1926.501 (osha.gov), workers on an unprotected surface six feet or more above a lower level need a guardrail, safety net, or personal fall arrest system. The ANSI/ASSP Z359 series tells manufacturers how harnesses and related components should be designed, labeled, and tested. Those documents matter because they make compliance verifiable.
Maintenance is another part of the equation. Fall protection equipment is exposed to sun, rain, hydraulic oil, concrete dust, salt air, and ordinary wear. Inspection is not one event. Labels fade. Webbing abrades. A D-ring can bend in a fall, even a short one. If a harness is hard to inspect, inspections do not happen. Low price often looks fine until you add inspection time and replacement frequency.
The same lens works for fire extinguishers and first aid
Total cost thinking is not limited to fall protection. I see the same pattern with a water fire extinguisher. NFPA 10 is the standard I use when reviewing extinguishers; it covers classes of fire, placement, inspection, and maintenance. A water unit can be the right choice for certain Class A fires, but if the hazard is live electrical equipment or a flammable liquid, that cheaper water extinguisher is the wrong tool. It will not control those fires safely. A purchase decision like that is not about price. It is about hazard classification and training.
And even the right extinguisher is only useful when someone can find it fast. Fire extinguisher signs are not decoration. They are emergency wayfinding. A few seconds of hesitation during a small fire can turn it into a building loss. The total cost of poor signage can include property damage, downtime, injuries, and increased insurance exposure. Keep extinguishers visible and keep access clear.
I feel the same way about first aid information. When people search online for how to stop pepper spray burn on skin, they find endless home remedies and copy-paste answers. But an exposure event is not a well-commented recipe. The right response depends on the specific product, the route of exposure, and the facility’s exposure control plan. Get away from continued exposure, flush the affected eye or skin with water as described in the product’s safety data sheet, do not rub, and call a medical professional if irritation continues. That is a procedure, not a life hack.
Budget objections are fair. Shortcuts are not.
I know what constrained budgets look like. I also know that a tight budget does not justify buying equipment without documentation and traceability. It means the safety spec has to be decided before the price contest begins. I can only speak to the equipment Guardian makes and tests. But one principle is broadly true: a protective device only protects when it is specified correctly, selected for the task, inspected on a schedule, and used by trained people.
So my argument is not expensive gear for its own sake. My argument is honest total cost. Compare vendors by all the factors that influence cost and safety. Compare the whole system, not the sticker on the box. If you do that, you will make fewer decisions that need defending later. That is the bottom line.
