If you’re buying fall protection on unit price alone, you’re not saving money. You’re just delaying the invoice. I know because I’ve done it. I’ve been handling safety equipment orders for industrial and construction crews for nine years. I’ve personally made—and documented—11 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $18,400 in wasted budget. Now I keep our team’s pre-check list taped inside the supply cabinet.

I’m not writing this as a vendor. I’m writing it as the guy who once thought a $200 savings on a yoyo SRL was a win. It wasn’t.

  • Training burden: Does the design match what my crew already knows, or will I need a half-day retraining for every new hire?

“But We Have a Tight Budget”

If the budget is tight, reduce the scope. Delay the non-critical work. Rent certified gear instead of buying no-name gear. But don’t put a $38 harness on a $75,000 worker and hope the sticker means something.

The Only Time Cheap Is Actually Cheap

Cheap works when the consequence is low and the specification is simple. A box of nitrile gloves? Fine. A basic tool lanyard? Maybe. A wrought iron fence bracket that’s not load-bearing? Sure, if it meets the spec.

Fall protection is different. A harness, anchor, lifeline, or yoyo SRL is a system. If one component is out of spec, the whole system is out of spec. That’s why I stopped chasing the lowest quote and started chasing the lowest total cost of ownership.

So glad I paid for certified harnesses after that 2022 mess. Almost went with a cheaper no-name lot to save $1,100. That would have left us with no traceable inspection records when an OSHA compliance officer asked for them. Dodged a bullet there—barely.

My Final Take

Is it possible to buy cheap fall protection and never have a problem? Sure. People drive without seatbelts and live to 90. That doesn’t make it a strategy.

The cheapest option is only cheapest if nothing goes wrong. In fall protection, “nothing goes wrong” is not a procurement plan. It’s a hope.

My rule is simple: for anything that stands between a worker and a fall, buy on value. Check the standard, check the traceability, check the replacement cycle, and then look at the price. If the number still looks good, buy it. If it doesn’t, don’t.

That $200 saving cost me $4,800. I’d rather pay for the gear than pay for the story.
